biography
Joseph Steib was born in Mulhouse in 1898. He attended the art school in Mulhouse from 1925 to 1926. Before the war, he earned a reputation as a painter of miniatures. In the 1930s he regularly took part in the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris.
His main job was for the Mulhouse water authority. He suffered from epilepsy , so he took early retirement in 1943 .
His main work are the 57 pictures of the cycle Salon des rêves (Salon of Dreams) painted during the Second World War .
He hid the pictures in his apartment and later in his house in Brunstatt because of the risk. The pictures were given away or sold after the death of his widow Rosa in 1981.
