Zander collection

The Zander Collection is an art museum in Bönnigheim near Ludwigsburg , which is located in the Stadionschen Schloss . The collection was brought together by the gallery owner and patron Charlotte Zander over a period of more than six decades and is now internationally recognized as one of the leading museums for naive art and art brut .

The collector Charlotte Zander

Charlotte Zander was born in 1930 as the daughter of the soap manufacturer Julius Willibald Stockhausen. From a young age, she began works of naive art of the 20th century, including works André Bauchants , Alfred Wallis , Matija Skurjenis and Nikifor acquire, from 1965 increasingly Art Brut and Outsider Art .

In 1971 she finally founded the Charlotte Gallery in Munich, which was one of the few institutions in Germany to represent classical naive art and make it internationally known. In 1997 she was awarded the Art Cologne Prize for her commitment and patronage of the fine arts .

In 1995 Charlotte Zander ended her work as a gallery owner. In order to make her own art collection accessible to the public, she founded the Charlotte Zander Museum in the Stadionschen Schloss in Bönnigheim. Here she showed works of classical naive painting from France, including works by Henri Rousseau , Séraphine Louis , Louis Vivins and Camille Bombois .

Until her death in 2014, she acted as the editor of many publications, curated numerous exhibitions for her private museum and created an important archive on Naive Art, Art Brut and Outsider Art, which documents the international developments of these art movements.

The realignment of the museum

After Charlotte Zander's death in March 2014, her daughter Susanne Zander took over the management of the museum with the aim of safeguarding her mother's collection over the long term. In 2015 the museum was incorporated into a non-profit company and the building was comprehensively renovated. In October of the same year the collection was reopened and the new hanging was shown in the form of the exhibition 27 artists, 209 works , curated by Susanne Pfeffer , director of the Fridericianum in Kassel.

The collection

The Zander Collection documents the development of Naive Art, Art Brut and Outsider Art since its beginnings around 1900, thus opening up an important chapter in the art of the 20th century. Among the more than 4,500 existing works, a focus is on the works of the French naive, especially works by the painters of the Sacred Heart. In addition to 144 works by André Bauchant , the museum owns a large number of works by Camille Bomboi and Louis Vivin . The museum also houses the world's largest collection of works by the painter Séraphine Louis and various paintings by the celebrated avant-garde artist, Henri Rousseau . In the area of ​​the international naive, works by Adolf Dietrich , Morris Hirshfield and Nikifors are also shown. Another focus of the collection is on Art Brut and Outsider Art, which are represented by works by Adolf Wölfli , Bill Traylor , Sava Sekulić and numerous other artists.

Bönnigheim Castle

The Zander Collection is housed in the castle in Bönnigheim , built by Count Anton Heinrich Friedrich von Stadion in 1753 . The building, built according to the plans of the architect Anselm Franz Reichsfreiherr von Ritter , is a single-wing solid building with a mansard roof and central projections, which was designed in the style of the French late baroque with Rococo decorations. While the northern risalit served as the destination point of the main street, the southern front originally opened up towards a regularly laid out garden, which gave the structure the features of both a city and a country palace.

Of particular beauty are the stucco work inside, the students of Kurmainzer Hofstuckateurs hunter Johann Peter were created in the ballroom probably even by himself. The castle is particularly for its famous inhabitant Sophie von la Roche known here in 1771 its sentimental novel story of Fraulein von Sternheim wrote.

As part of the realignment of the Zander Collection in 2015, the palace was extensively renovated and opened to the public again in October of the same year.
