Joseph W. Walsh

Joseph W. Walsh (* around 1943 ) is an American politician ( Democratic Party ). During his political career, he was a member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives and the Rhode Island Senate . From 1977 to 1984 he was Mayor of Warwick , Rhode Island .

Life

Walsh grew up in South Providence , a region within Providence . He attended St. Michael's School , La Salle Academy, and Providence College . He later studied at Georgetown University in Washington, DC and received a Juris Doctor from the law school there . After returning to Rhode Island, he started a company with two long-time friends.

In 1969 he ran successfully as a Democrat for a seat in the House of Representatives from Rhode Island. He was later elected to the Rhode Island Senate, where he served as Majority Whip and contributed to reforming the state's criminal justice system .

1976 Walsh ran successfully in the election for Mayor of Warwick, Rhode Island. In 1978, 1980 and 1982 he was re-elected. In 1984 he decided not to run again, instead he took part in his party's primary elections to determine the democratic candidate in the upcoming gourmets election. Walsh had the support of the party leadership, but was defeated by Anthony J. Solomon , the current State Treasurer of Rhode Island, with 42.05% to 57.95%. of the votes cast.

Walsh now withdrew from politics and worked as a lobbyist for Tillinghast light . He later moved to Government Strategies, LLC.

In 2012 he was inducted into the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame . In 2017 he was inducted into the Rhode Island Criminal Justice Hall of Fame .

Walsh is married with two children, a son and a daughter.
