Joseph van der Giese

Joseph van der Giese (born March 3, 1803 in Düren ; † August 3, 1850 there ) was a poet in Düren dialect .

He learned the trade of goldsmith from his father . After the death of his father, he worked for his uncle until the end of his life.

On many secular and ecclesiastical occasions van der Giese wrote plays or poems, and very often in Düren dialect. He performed the plays with the theater association of which he was a member.

In 1838 van der Giese published volumes of poetry under the title Fääld-Bloome ( Field Flowers ). Van der Giese died of pulmonary consumption .

In 1880, the then mayor of Werner had a commemorative book printed with the name Dürener Volkstum , “a collection of idioms, proverbs, riddles, games, etc. together with a dictionary of the strangest expressions in the Düren vernacular by PJ Fischbach and J. van der Giese ".

Jakob Satzfey published his plays and poems in 1894/1895 .

The city ​​council decided on September 9, 1914 to rename part of what was then Friedhofstrasse to Van-der-Giese-Strasse.
