Josiah Forshall

Josiah Forshall (born March 29, 1795 in Witney , Oxfordshire , † December 18, 1863 in London ) was an English librarian and paleographer at the library of the British Museum .

Forshall went to school in Exeter and Chester and studied mathematics and the humanities at Oxford University ( Exeter College ) from 1814 . In 1818 he received his bachelor's degree and in 1821 his master's degree. He then became a Fellow and Tutor at Exeter College. In 1824 he became Assistant Librarian in the manuscript department of the British Museum and in 1827 Keeper. In 1828 he also became secretary of the museum and in 1837 gave up his position as keeper to only be secretary. In 1850 he retired for health reasons. From 1829 and after retirement he was chaplain of the Foundling Hospital .

He published various manuscript catalogs for the museum (including Syrian manuscripts and Greek papyri). With Frederic Madden he published the Bible edition of John Wyclif in 1850 . In 1864 he published a book on the Lord's Prayer and published editions of the four Gospels (the first 12 chapters of the Gospel of Matthew appeared posthumously).

In 1828 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society .
