Yossif Vladimirovich Ostrovsky
Jossif Wladimirowitsch Ostrowski , Russian Иосиф Владимирович Островский , English transcription Iossif (or Iosif) Vladimirovich Ostrovskii, (born April 6, 1934 in Dnipropetrovsk ) is a Ukrainian mathematician who is concerned with probability and function .
Life
Ostrowski studied at the University of Kharkiv , where Boris Jakowlewitsch Levin was one of his teachers. He graduated in 1956 and received his PhD in 1959 (The relationship between the growth of a meromorphic function and the distribution of its values). From 1958 he taught himself at the university and from 1963 he held the chair for functional theory. In 1965 he completed his habilitation (Russian doctorate, title of habilitation: The asymptotic properties of whole and meromorphic functions and some of their applications). In 1986 he also became head of the functional theory department at the Institute for Low Temperature Physics of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences in Kharkiv and in 1996 professor at Bilkent University .
He and Anatoli Asirowitsch Goldberg wrote a standard work on Nevanlinna theory . He has worked with Goldberg in this area since the late 1950s.
In 1992 he received the State Prize of Ukraine with AA Goldberg and Boris Jakowlewitsch Lewin.
He is a passionate sailor.
