The Journal des sçavans , founded by Denis de Sallo , was the first scientific journal to be published in Europe .

The first edition of the journal appeared on January 5, 1665 and had 12 pages. The journal was thus published a few months before the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society in London .

After the French Revolution , the journal's focus changed from science to literature. In 1816 the Journal des sçavans was renamed Journal des savants .
