Jozef van Wissem (* 1962 in Maastricht ) is a Dutch lute player and composer. He works primarily at the interface between baroque lute music and modern avant-garde . The titles of his songs often have a Christian - mystical appeal.

Career

Van Wissem first learned classical guitar as a child , later he studied lute with Pat O'Brien , a well-known guitarist and lute teacher in New York . He became known through his collaboration with Jim Jarmusch , with whom he recorded two albums as a duo. In 2013, his soundtrack to Jarmusch's film Only Lovers Left Alive was awarded at the Cannes Film Festival . He also worked with James Blackshaw , Maurizio Bianchi and Tilda Swinton , and wrote the music for the Sims Medieval video game .

Jozef van Wissem lives in New York.

Ring

According to his own statements, van Wissem plays 6 to 10-string renaissance lutes , a medieval lute played with a feather and 11 to 16-string baroque lutes . He also uses guitar amps to create feedback effects .
