Career

Club career

Juan Carlos Sarnari played the first years of his career as an active soccer player from 1959 to 1962 at CA River Plate in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires . After a brief engagement at CA Huracán , he was again active for River from 1964 to 1967. With the Millonarios , as River Plate is called because of their many expensive purchases since the thirties, Juan Carlos Sarnari won no championship, but qualified second in the Primera División 1965 for the Copa Libertadores 1966 , where the final was reached. There, coach Renato Cesarini's team , himself a player at River and Juventus Turin thirty years earlier , met CA Peñarol from Uruguay's capital Montevideo . After it had been tied on the return leg, a playoff for the Libertadores winner had to decide, which was finally won by the Uruguayans 4-2 after extra time. Juan Carlos Sarnari was used in all three finals and scored the goal in the second leg at home, Estadio Monumental, making it 2-2. He was also a frequent participant in the Copa Libertadores in other years and came to a total of 29 goals in this competition over the years, making him the player with the sixth most hits in the Libertadores Cup.

In 1967 Juan Carlos Sarnari left CA River Plate for the second time and went to Chile to CD Universidad Católica . In the following years he played in Chile with Católica and CF Universidad de Chile until 1972 , without winning a national championship title. However, he was able to increase his hit rate in the Copa Libertadores, because he took part with these clubs in the Copa Libertadores almost every year. In 1973 he went to Colombia to join Independiente Medellín . After a year there, he played another two years at Independiente Santa Fe and won the Copa Mustang , the Colombian championship, with the club in 1975 , which was the first title for Sarnari in his long career. The following year, 1976, Juan Carlos Sarnari's active career ended at the age of 34.

Nowadays, Juan Carlos Sarnari owns an Argentine restaurant in Colombia, having previously coached some Colombian clubs like Independiente Santa Fe and Once Caldas .

National team

Juan Carlos Sarnari came between 1966 and 1967 to seven international matches in the Argentine national football team , in which he scored a goal. With the national team of his home country he took part in the 1966 World Cup in England , but was not used during the tournament. The Argentine team reached the quarter-finals, where they failed to England. Before that, they were runner-up in Group B behind Germany , who had won a goalless draw, and ahead of Spain and Switzerland .
