Juan Idiarte Borda

Juan Bautista Idiarte Borda y Soumastre (born April 20, 1844 in Mercedes , † August 25, 1897 in Montevideo ) was a Uruguayan politician .

Idiarte Borda was born the son of French-Basque immigrants in Mercedes , the capital of the Soriano department . He belonged to the Partido Colorado and represented his home department several times as an elected MP. He also moved into the Senate in 1890.

On March 21, 1894, he succeeded the interim president Duncan Stewart and was thus president of Uruguay . He remained in office until August 25, 1897. He was assassinated that day when the perpetrator Arredondo shot him in front of the Montevideo cathedral, which the president was just leaving. This was the only crime of its kind against a sitting president in the history of Uruguay to date. Previously, on April 21 and May 20, 1897, an unsuccessful pistol and bomb attack had been carried out on him. His successor was Juan Lindolfo Cuestas .
