Soriano is a department in Uruguay .

geography

It is located in the west of the country, on the border with Argentina formed by the Uruguay River . In the north it borders on the department Río Negro , in the south lies the neighboring department Colonia and in the east it is bordered by Flores . Soriano has a slightly hilly relief. From northwest to southeast the department is crossed by the Cuchilla del Bizcocho , which acts as a watershed between the two river basins of the Río San Salvador and the Río Negro .

Inhabitants and settlement structure

While 84,563 inhabitants were counted in 2004, the number of inhabitants determined as part of the 2011 census was 82,595. Of these, 40,853 were men and 41,742 women. The capital Mercedes has 42,032 inhabitants (as of 2004) and is located on the Río Negro not far from its confluence with the Río Uruguay. It is an old colonial town that is a popular tourist center in summer due to its location on the river.

The second most important city is Dolores , a little further south , a port city with 15,753 inhabitants (as of 2004). Other cities in Soriano are Cardona , Chacras de Dolores , José Enrique Rodó , Palmitas and Villa Soriano .

Infrastructure

education

Soriano has a total of nine secondary schools ( Liceos ), in which 5,896 students are taught by 566 teachers. The oldest liceo in the department is Liceo N ° 2 "Luis Alberto Zanzi" , which was founded in 1903 and is located in the capital of the department, Mercedes . (As of December 2008)

politics

Guillermo Besozzi of the Partido Nacional holds the leading position of the executive branch of the department, the office of intendente .
