Villa Soriano , also known as Santo Domingo de Soriano or Villa de Soriano , is a city in southwestern Uruguay .

geography

It is located in the department of Soriano on the left bank of the Río Negro . A few kilometers west of the city, the Río Negro flows into the Río Uruguay . The town of Dolores is located just under 20 km to the southeast .

history

The city was founded in 1624 under the name Santo Domingo Soriano , making it the first permanent settlement of European immigrants on Uruguayan soil. From the establishment of the department until July 6, 1857, it was the capital of the same.

Sports

The football club Villa Soriano FC , founded on November 18, 2005 from the merger of the clubs Cabildo , Hum , Nacional and Obrero Sporting , is the only active club in this area in the city. He currently plays in the Liga Regional de Fútbol de Dolores .
