Life

Juan Marichal, 1962

Juan Marichal made his debut in the National League with the San Francisco Giants on July 19, 1960. In the first game of his career, he allowed only a single base hit against the Philadelphia Phillies in a 2-0 win. As early as 1962 he was able to win the championship in the National League with the Giants. Towards the end of the season he injured his foot and lost his last three games. There were playoffs against the Los Angeles Dodgers , in which this injury broke up again. So he came in the World Series against the New York Yankees only one use, the Giants were defeated in five games.

On June 15, 1963 he managed a no-hitter against the Houston Astros in a 1-0 victory. On July 2, 1963, he defeated the Milwaukee Braves with Warren Spahn in 16 innings . From 1963 to 1969, with the exception of 1967, Marichal achieved at least 20 victories a year. In 1963 and 1968 he led the National League in victories and had no ERA higher than 2.76.

Juan Marichal experienced the negative climax of his career on August 22, 1965 in the game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Marichal was on strike, the Dodgers' pitcher was Sandy Koufax . The Dodgers catcher John Roseboro threw a ball back at Koufax, but in Marichal's opinion it went too close to his head. An argument ensued in which Marichal then hit Roseboro on the head with the bat. This led to a fourteen-minute argument between all the players on both teams. Roseboro had to be sewn with 14 stitches, Marichal was sent off, suspended for nine games and fined $ 1,750. Roseboro wanted to take legal action against Marichal, which ultimately did not happen. Both spoke out after this incident and even became close friends who even signed pictures of this incident together.

Marichal was appointed to the All-Star Team nine times, and in 1965 he was even elected MVP of the game. In 1971 he was still able to win the title in the National League West with the Giants, but in the National League Championship Series they failed at the Pittsburgh Pirates .

After the 1973 season he left the Giants and played one more season each with the Boston Red Sox and the Los Angeles Dodgers. In Los Angeles he was only used in two games and ended his career on April 16, 1975.

His jersey number 27 is no longer awarded by the San Francisco Giants. In 1983 he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame . After his career, he also served as Minister of Sports in the Dominican Republic. In 1990 he was working as a commentator for Spanish radio when his son-in-law Jose Rijo won the World Series MVP title. In 2005, a statue of Juan Marichal was unveiled outside Pacific Bell Park.
