Juan Martínez Silíceo
Juan Martínez Silíceo (* 1486 in Villagarcía de la Torre , Spain, † May 31, 1557 in Toledo ) was a cardinal and Roman Catholic bishop .
Career
After studying grammar and philosophy at the University of Herena, he was sacristan of the parish of Villagarcía de la Torre. Working as the educator of two aristocratic sons in Valencia, he followed the advice of a clergyman and went to Paris for further studies, where he even became a university student. Returned to Spain, he became professor of moral philosophy at the Colegio de San Bartolomé in Salamanca and Canon of Coria. In July 1534 he became the teacher of the future King Philip II , as well as his almsman and confessor. Appointed Bishop of Cartagena on February 23, 1541, he became Archbishop of Toledo on January 8, 1546. In 1547 he put one of the hottest Limpieza de sangre statues in the cathedral chapter there. Pope Paul IV made him cardinal priest on December 20, 1555 and assigned him to the titular church of Ss. Nereo ed Achilleo too.
