biography

Juan Pardo de Tavera was the son of Ares Pardo and Guiomar Tavera. His maternal uncle was Diego de Deza OP , Archbishop of Seville , who became a mentor for his ecclesiastical career. He graduated from the University of Salamanca with a degree (Latin, Rhetoric and Canon Law) ; in 1505 he became its rector. In the same year he received a seat on the Chapter of Seville Cathedral . In July 1514 he was elected Bishop of Ciudad Rodrigo ; he received orders in the same year.

The Cardinal Adrian of Utrecht commissioned him with the preparations for the marriage between Charles V and Isabella of Portugal and the marriage of John III. of Portugal with Catherine of Castile . In December 1523 he was appointed Bishop of Osma ; six months later, he became Bishop of Santiago de Compostela . In 1524 he became President of the Privy Council and chaired several meetings of the Estates General until 1538. In the meantime, Pope Clement VII appointed him Cardinal and Archbishop of Toledo. In the years 1539 to 1541 Charles V gave him the rule of Spain during his absence . After his death in 1545, Charles V is said to have noticed that an old man had died who had ruled his kingdom for him with a cane.

Tomb

Juan Pardo de Tavera was buried first in Valladolid and later in the church of the Hospital de Tavera in Toledo, which he himself had donated but was still unfinished at the time of his death . Alonso Berruguete created a precious marble tomb for him in the years 1551–1561 , where he is depicted as a reclining figure ( gisant ) - surrounded by the four cardinal virtues wisdom / prudentia ( sapientia / prudentia ), justice ( iustitia ), bravery ( fortitudo ) and moderation ( temperantia ). The posthumous portrait made by El Greco after his death mask around 1610 can also be seen there.
