Alonso Berruguete
Alonso Berruguete (* 1480 in Parades de Nava , † 1561 in Toledo ) was a Spanish sculptor , painter and architect . He was a son of the famous painter Pedro Berruguete .
Alonso studied in Florence and Rome , where he worked a lot after Michelangelo and antiquity. Returned to Spain in 1520 , Charles V appointed him his painter and sculptor as well as the overseer and director of the royal buildings. In this capacity, Berreguete created and adorned the new royal palace in Granada , whose floor plan and the magnificent circular courtyard inside with its colonnade made of breccia marble testify to the artist's trained taste. The Archbishop of Toledo , Alonso de Fonseca , entrusted him with the work in the Grand College that he founded at Salamanca , the Archbishop of Cuenca with the work in the gallery of the Grand College of his Archdiocese.
Berruguete also made the altar of the church of San Benito el Real in Valladolid, including its sculptural and picturesque decorations. In the cathedral at Toledo he adorned the choir with half-raised works; a masterpiece is the transfiguration of Christ on Mount Tabor in the rear choir, carved from a single piece of marble. His last work is the tomb of Cardinal Juan de Tavera in the Hospital of St. John in Toledo. Among Berruguete's buildings we still mention the Casa del Ayuntamiento (City Hall) in Seville , a model of the simple-beautiful style, which he made dominant in Spain instead of the earlier overload. Berruguete died as lord of Ventosa, a country estate near Alcalá de Henares .
