Don Juan Servera Camps (born April 4, 1878 in Son Servera , † December 19, 1957 ) was a Spanish pioneer of tourism in Mallorca and opened the dragon caves of Porto Cristo to the public.

Life

He took up the profession of lawyer and lived on Mallorca in Manacor , where he married his wife Angela Amer Nadal. He was one of the founders of the Mallorca Tourist Board. On June 17, 1922, he acquired the San Moro estate from the Moragues family from Palma, which also included the Dragon Caves, which were already well explored at that time. He then moved to Porto Cristo after the purchase and initiated extensive construction work to open up the caves for tourism. He had paths and stairs laid out until 1925, and in 1929 he created a new entrance to the cave, which has served as the main entrance ever since. In 1929 he commissioned engineer Carlos Buigas to install cave lighting. The work was carried out in 1934. The inauguration took place on April 23, 1935. The Dragon Caves are one of the most important sights on Mallorca.

Honors

In his honor, a monument in the form of a bust on a pedestal was erected not far from the caves. In addition, a nearby street was named after him as Avinguda Joan Servera Camps .
