Juarez Estevam Xavier Tavares , also known as Juarez Tavares , (born September 2, 1942 in Curitiba ) is a Brazilian lawyer who specializes in criminal law , criminology and legal philosophy .

Life

Juarez Estevam Xavier Tavares graduated from the Federal University of Paraná and holds a Masters and PhD degrees in law from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and the State University of Rio de Janeiro . He completed his postdoctoral studies at the University of Frankfurt am Main . He was then visiting professor in Buenos Aires, Frankfurt and Seville, full professor at the State University of Rio de Janeiro, professor emeritus at the Judges' School of the State of Rio de Janeiro and honorary professor at the University of San Martin (Peru). He was also the Republic's sub-attorney general in Brazil for a long time.

On the basis of critical considerations throughout his academic career, he “freed himself from dogmatic ties” and wrote “from the perspective that the criminal law, rather than being nourished by misfortune and suffering, prescribes as an instrument to protect the person should serve the state ”, which enabled him to“ critically review the theory of crime ”.
