Judhael de Totnes , also Juhel de Totnes († before 1130), was a Norman nobleman and supporter of William the Conqueror .

origin

According to his own information, his father was called Alfred, whether Judhael comes from Brittany or Normandy is unclear.

Life

Probably shortly after the Norman conquest of England , Judhael was given extensive estates along the east coast of Devon . In south-west England there had been a rebellion against the Norman conquerors in 1068, and the coasts were also threatened by Irish pirates. To secure Norman rule, Judhael built Totnes Castle in the northeast of the Anglo-Saxon city of Totnes . He also founded the Benedictine priory of St Mary in Totnes. In the Domesday Book in 1086 Judhael is named as lord of over 100 fiefdoms, but under King Wilhelm II he lost Totnes for unknown reasons around 1091, which fell to Roger de Nonant .

Around 1100 Judhael acquired the rule of Barnstaple , where he founded the monastery of St Martin-des-Champs. As an old man he entered the monastery in 1123 and died there before 1130.

family

Judhael had two daughters and a son:

His grandson William de Braose, 3rd Baron of Bramber , son of his daughter Aenor inherited half of the Barony of Barnstaple in 1155, the Barony of Totnes was divided in 1206 between his great-grandson William de Braose, 4th Baron of Bramber and Henry de Nonant.
