William de Braose, 3rd Baron of Bramber (* around 1100/1112; † around 1192) was an Anglo- Norman nobleman.

Origin and heritage of his father

William came from the Norman Braose family and was the eldest son of Philip de Braose and Aenor von Totnes , daughter of Judhael de Totnes . After his father's death in the 1130s, he became Baron von Bramber and other estates in Sussex , Totnes in Devon and Radnor and Builth Castle in the Welsh Marches . He confirmed his father's donations to St Florent Abbey in Anjou and made his own donations to Sele Abbey in Sussex.

Participation in the English Civil War

During the Civil War he was part of the escort that was to bring Empress Maud to her half-brother Robert of Gloucester in Bristol in 1139 after her landing in England and the subsequent defeat of Arundel . William was a faithful follower of King Stephen until the Treaty of Wallingford . From 1153 he was often in the suite of Henry II. He is mentioned in the suite in 1158 and 1164, accompanied the king to France in 1161/62 and to Ireland in 1171/72. Around 1155 he inherited half of Barnstaple in Devon through his mother and paid a fee of 1,000 marks for it .

Marriage and inheritance of his father-in-law

He married Bertha de Gloucester around 1148 (* around 1130), a daughter of Miles of Gloucester and Sibyl de Neufmarché . His marriage brought William a rich inheritance in 1166 after all of his wife's four brothers died young and without heirs. His wife Bertha and her sister Margaret heir to the extensive property of their parents, she received Brecon , Abergavenny and Hay Castle . Through this inheritance, William became lord of contiguous land holdings in the central Welsh Marches and was one of the most powerful Marcher Lords . His daughters were well married, most notably Sibilla to the Earl of Derby . William became sheriff of Hereford in 1174/75 , but after the Abergavenny massacre carried out by his son in 1175, he lost the king's favor and presumably withdrew to his estate in Sussex.
