Judo Grand Slam tournament
A judo grand slam tournament is an international judo tournament. After the Olympic Games and the Judo World Championships, Grand Slam tournaments are the highest ranking worldwide judo tournaments, i.e. the tournaments in which the judoka can acquire the most world ranking points.
The first Grand Slam tournament was held in Tokyo in December 2008. In 2009 tournaments in Paris, Moscow and Rio de Janeiro were added. In 2013, Baku replaced Rio de Janeiro. Up until 2013 there were four Grand Slam tournaments a year. In 2014 a fifth tournament was added with the tournament in Abu Dhabi, up to 2018 there were five tournaments and in 2019 there were seven tournaments.
The course of the year today is usually such that the first tournament in February is the tournament in Paris , followed by the tournament in Düsseldorf and the tournament in Russia . The tournament in Baku will follow in May . In 2019 there was a tournament in Brasilia at the beginning of October, the tournament in Abu Dhabi at the end of October and the tournament in Japan in November or December .
