The Bremen Youth Hostel or the Youth House in Bremen - Mitte in the Stephaniviertel , Kalkstrasse 6, is centrally located, directly on the Weser . The old and new buildings are among the most important buildings in Bremen .

history

In 1953 an architectural competition for the construction of a youth hostel was held. In the 1950s was for the German Youth Hostel Association , the (DJH) Hostel in a central city location with River View to plans by the architect Bremer and competition winner Carsten Schrock built. Architecturally, the building with its brick architecture is clearly structured. A six-storey, vertically structured ward block formed the backbone of the facility. A two-story, horizontal porch with the entrance area and the common rooms on the first floor is oriented towards the Weser. The main entrance is on a small forecourt. A large sun terrace on the roof of the porch, with a typical kidney-shaped weather protection roof, serves as a popular open space with a view of the Weser.

In 2005 the youth hostel was expanded and rebuilt according to the plans of the architect Arbeitsgemeinschaft Raumzeit , Berlin, according to current customer requirements. A new tower-like ward block was added above the porch. The new building forms a conscious, strong contrast to the old building with a glass facade in different shades of yellow. The distinctive structure also serves as a landmark on the banks of the Weser.

The architects explained their design considerations and a .:

“Overall, the expansion of the youth hostel does not follow an aesthetic ideal of the 'harmonious, organic whole', but deliberately puts old and new in a relationship of resonance and friction. This concept based on modulations and slight disharmony is also followed by the color scheme of the extension buildings. The aubergine of the low-rise building is based on the red-brown brick tone of the old building façades, but is high-gloss, not matt and porous like the bricks. The dark tone contrasts with the bright yellow tones of the new bed block. The modulation of the lemon, orange, yellow and beige tones also contains slight disharmonies that have a refreshing effect. Both the dark aubergine and the yellow tones make the building look different, depending on the lighting mood and direction of view; but it always shines as a signal from afar, like the yellow shipping signs in the Weser. "
The guest ship The Weser on the Schlachte

The youth hostel currently (2014) has 216 beds in 56 rooms, including 20 two-bed rooms, 20 four-bed rooms and 16 six-bed rooms; 7 rooms are wheelchair accessible.

Since June 26, 2008, the replica of the paddle steamer Die Weser has been lying on pontoon 8 on the Schlachte directly in front of the Bremen Youth Hostel as a guest ship with 30 beds, which is also used by the Youth Hostel.
