Jules Frederik Juergensen
Jules Frederik Jürgensen (born July 27, 1808 in Le Locle ; † December 17, 1877 in Geneva ) was a Danish - Swiss watch and chronometer maker .
Life
Jules Jürgensen was born on July 27, 1808 in Le Locle (Switzerland) as the son of Urban Jürgensen and Sophie-Henriette, nee. Houriet, born. When Jürgensen was 15 months old, his parents returned to Denmark. In Copenhagen , Jürgensen received an apprenticeship in his father's watch company and also studied mathematics, astronomy and foreign languages. After Urban Jürgensen's death, he and Louis Urban took over the manufacture. Jules Jürgensen began a study trip to London , Paris , Geneva and Le Locle in 1834 . In Geneva he married the young widow Anastasie Lavalette in 1835. In 1835 he opened a watch factory in Les Brenets, a branch of his father's shop in Copenhagen. In 1838 he was naturalized. In 1872 Jürgensen withdrew from the business and handed it over to his son Jules Frédéric Urban. After three years he passed the business on to his younger brother Jacques-Alfred. Both were childless. With Jacqes-Alfred's death in 1912, the Jürgensen family of watchmakers ended.
Jürgensen was friends with the physicist François Arago and the storyteller Hans Christian Andersen .
He died in Geneva on December 17, 1877.
Services
Jürgensen received worldwide attention with the manufacture of watches and pocket chronometers. He made around 13,000 watches in Switzerland, signed Jules Jürgensen Copenhagen . The USA became its main export country. Jules Juergensen not only had the talent of his father, but was also an excellent businessman. He made a great fortune and in 1862 bought the Le Châtelard estate in Les Brenets . In 1874, Jürgensen had the Tour Jürgensen built.
