Julián Orbón
Julián Orbón (born August 7, 1925 in Avilés , Asturias , † May 21, 1991 in Miami ) was a Cuban composer of Spanish origin.
Life
Orbón had his first lessons from his father, the pianist Benjamin Orbón , with whom he went to Cuba in 1940. There he was a student of Oscar Loirée and José Ardévol and was active in the group Renovación Musical, which they founded . This group, dedicated to the promotion of a national Cuban music, included a. a. Harold Gramatges , Edgardo Martín , Hilario González , Gisela Hernández Gonzalo and Virginia Fleites .
From 1945 Orbón also worked as a critic for Alerta magazine . In 1954 he received the Premio Juan de Landaeta for his Tres versiones sinfónicas at the International Music Festival in Caracas and took lessons from Aaron Copland on a scholarship in Tanglewood .
In 1960 he moved to Mexico and settled in the USA in 1963, where he taught as a professor at the universities of Washington, Miami and, since 1981, Princeton. In 1967 he received a prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and in 1969 a Guggenheim scholarship . In 1986 he became an honorary citizen of his native Avilés, whose conservatory bears his name.
