Gisela Hernández Gonzalo

Gisela Hernández Gonzalo (born September 15, 1912 in Cárdenas , † August 23, 1971 in Havana ) was a Cuban musicologist and composer .

Hernández Gonzalo studied in Havana with José Ardévol and in Baltimore with Gustav Strube . From 1948 she worked at the Havana Conservatory with Olga de Blanck , with whom she edited critical editions of 19th century Cuban music . In addition, she toured Cuba and North and South America for many years as the director of the Havana Choir Association.

She composed a Cuban triptych for orchestra, a cantata , dramatic music, chamber music works, choirs, piano pieces and two song cycles. Her songs are settings of works by various poets, including Dulce María Loynaz , Federico García Lorca , José Lezama Lima , Cintio Vitier and Nicolás Guillén .
