Julia Theek (born June 9, 1966 in Potsdam ) is a German artist and filmmaker .

Life

Julia Theek spent her childhood in Berlin and Potsdam. She learned traditional art techniques from her grandfather, the artist Paul August , from pre-school age. After graduating from high school, she worked for the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation in Berlin-Brandenburg and the “State Houses of Culture” until, after a three-year waiting period, she was enrolled in the “Aesthetics and Art Studies” department at the Humboldt University in Berlin. She wrote her thesis on "Semiotic Interpretation Methods for Television Design". She has curated exhibitions since 1988, and has been present herself with exhibitions since the late 1980s. Since 1990 she has been working as a freelance writer and director for cultural editorial offices a. a. from SFB , DW and RBB , then produced e.g. In part also herself. In 2012 Julia Theek founded the summer academy “Lübzer Kunstspeicher”, which thematizes digital and traditional art techniques combined with upcycling and sustainability.
Julia Theek lives in Potsdam and on the Canary Islands .

The art exhibitions are the results of research cycles. As a painter, Julia Theek mainly works with airbrush , spraying from the "can" and with spray guns. The combination of the mostly 4- to 12-part template sets places the subjects in various iconic and symbolic references or references. The peculiarity of the work consists in the interpretation of traditional motifs with aesthetic experiences of the MTV generation and stylistic devices of street art . Since 1998 he has worked on sculptures, initially classically made of marble and since 2010 assemblages made mainly of upcycled material.
