Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz
Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz (born February 16, 1757 on the Skoki estate near Brest-Litowsk , † May 21, 1841 in Paris ) was a Polish scholar, poet and statesman.
Life
Niemcewicz received his education at the cadet institute in Warsaw, in 1777 he was adjutant to Prince Adam Kazimierz Czartoryski and later spent several years in France, England and Italy.
As a member of the Livonian Voivodeship and Marshal of the Four-Year Sejms 1788–92 , he was one of the advocates of the rights of the third estate. In 1794 he fought under Tadeusz Kościuszko as his adjutant against the Russians in the Kościuszko uprising and was captured in the Battle of Maciejowice . From this he was released by Tsar Paul I in 1796 and followed Kościuszko to America via Sweden and England. In 1802 he returned to Warsaw . In 1803 he lived in Paris, in 1804 he went to America again, but later returned to Poland. When several districts armed for national independence here in 1812, the nobility of Brześć elected him marshal. After the defeat of the French army, he went back to North America. He later returned to Warsaw, where after the Congress of Vienna he was employed as State Secretary and President of the Constitutional Committee in the new Kingdom of Poland , and in 1828 he was appointed President of the Warsaw Society of Friends of Science .
After the failure of the November uprising of 1830 , he fled first to London, then to Paris, where he died on May 21, 1841. Cenotaphs were erected in the parish church of Montmorency in memory of him and General Karol Kniaziewicz, who died a few months later .
