Julian Poerksen

Julian Pörksen (* 1985 in Freiburg) is a German author , director and dramaturge .

Life

Pörksen worked as an assistant for Christoph Schlingensief , studied German, history and philosophy at the Free University of Berlin and then dramaturgy in Leipzig. Since then he has written a non-fiction book, several plays and scripts, which he realized as a director. His film debut Sometimes we sit and think and sometimes we just sit, about a 50-year-old man who voluntarily moves into a nursing home and triggers a wealth of events with his passivity, premiered at the Berlinale in 2012 (Perspektive Deutsches Kino). In 2013 his essay Waste Your Time was published , the third edition is now available and has been translated into English. In 2016 he published the playbook We want to be plankton . The eponymous play premiered in 2017 at the Schauspiel Köln. In the same year the game app The Ultimate Game was released .

Pörksen's first feature film, the road movie Whatever Happens Next , premiered at the Berlinale in 2018. It is about a dropout and good-for-nothing who disappears from his old life and from then on leaves himself entirely to chance. Poerksen's debut received positive reviews. At the Filmkunstfest Mecklenburg-Vorpommern , Pörksen won the DEFA Foundation's 4,000 euro award for Whatever Happens Next . In January 2019 Julian Pörksen made his debut as a theater director at the Schauspiel Köln with his play La bella confusione . In 2019 he was awarded the Kompagnon-Förderpreis of the Berlinale. In the same year he was awarded the Ivan Illich Prize for his essay Volatility . He directed the entire season of the series From the Diary of an Uber Driver .

Publications

In 2013 he published the book Verschwende Deine Zeit at Alexander Verlag in Berlin . A plea. The foreword was written by the dramaturge Carl Hegemann . In the book, which revolves around the current discourse on fast pace and deceleration, on the performance and the tired society, and which is reflected in countless publications or discussions in radio and television programs, as well as on the question of how the art of economization can withdraw from our world and the "utility paradigm".
