Juliane House

Juliane House (* 1942 ) is a trained translator and linguist. Until her retirement she was a professor for language teaching research at the University of Hamburg . She currently works at the Hellenic American University in Athens .

Life

Juliane House graduated from Heidelberg University in 1966 as a translator for English and Spanish as well as for international law . Already during her studies she worked as a translator and foreign language teacher. After completing her studies, she also worked as a market researcher and temporary worker in a library at York University in Toronto. In 1970 and 1971 Juliane House also obtained a Bachelor of Education and Master of Arts degrees in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics. From 1970 to 1974 House also worked at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) at the University of Toronto. In 1976 Juliane House was awarded the Doctor of Philosophy ( PhD ) by the University of Toronto for her doctoral thesis entitled "A Model for Translation Quality Assessment" .

From 1976 to 1979 she worked at the University of Bochum , where she worked with Willis Edmondson , Gabriele Kasper and Brigitte Stemmer on the project " Communicative Competence as a Realizable Learning Objective". In 1981 she moved to the University of Hamburg. Until her retirement in 2008 she worked there as a professor for language teaching research with a focus on English and German. From 2005 to 2012 she led a series of research projects on multilingualism and multiculturalism with Annelie Knapp and Adelheid Schumann.

In the year of her retirement, Juliane House took over the management of the doctoral program in the field of applied linguistics at the Hellenic American University in Athens. From 2010 to 2016 she was President of the "International Association for Translation and Intercultural Studies" (IATIS).

Juliane House was married to the linguist Willis Edmondson.

Juliane House received an honorary doctorate from the University of Jyväskylä ( Finland ) in 1998 and the "Distinguished Scholar Award 1996/1997 Language Learning" from the University of Michigan , Ann Arbor, and in 1997 the "Distinguished Scholar in Residence Program" from the University of Ottawa .
