The checkerboard slim cichlid ( Julidochromis marlieri ) is a cichlid from Africa .

Occurrence and habitat

Julidochromis marlieri is endemic and inhabits the rocky shores of Lake Tanganyika . The checkerboard slim cichlid is mainly found in the northwest corner of the lake near Makabola ( Democratic Republic of the Congo ). The water temperature is 24–26 ° C. In addition, the water is slightly basic ( pH 7.5–8.0).

features

The length of the fish is approx. 15 cm. Gender differences are not very pronounced. The male's genital papilla is pointed while that of the female is blunt. Fully grown males of Julidochromis marlieri also have a fat hump on their head. Depending on where they were found, various morphs of Julidochromis marlieri are known, for example J. marlieri "Katoto", J. marlieri "Magara" or J. marlieri "Gombe". The external appearance of the animals shows major differences, so that - for example for the location variant "Gombe" - it is assumed that this could be a separate species.

Sexual Behavior and Brood

The female lays about 300 eggs in a cave, whereupon the young hatch after a three-day incubation period . The fry spend a long time in the vicinity of the spawning area. It can also hybrids between species Julidochromis marlieri and Julidochromis ornatus arise (Golden Julie), but they are infertile . The hybrids are reminiscent of Julidochromis transcriptus (black and white slim cichlid).

Keeping as ornamental and farmed fish

The checkerboard slim cichlid is kept as an ornamental fish . It should be ensured that there is enough space (approx. 100–200 l for a couple). In addition, the fish is aggressive towards others as well as its own species, so it should not be kept in community tanks.
