Life
Juliet Marillier was born in Dunedin, New Zealand and, thanks to her Irish - Scottish roots, grew up with Celtic legends and stories. She graduated from the University of Otago with a BA in Languages and a Bachelor of Music. In an interview, she later said that her studies shaped her writing style and that it had further increased her interest in history, folklore and mythology.
After graduating, she worked, among other things, as an opera singer and choir director , as well as a teacher and lecturer at high schools and universities. It wasn't until 2002, when her Sevenwaters series became a success, that she decided to work only as a writer.
She lives with two dogs and a cat in a hundred year old cottage in the suburbs of Perth. Her four adult children and her two grandchildren all live in Australia. She is also a member of the neo-pagan order OBOD (Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids) and her spiritual values are often reflected in her stories - the closeness of her human book characters to nature is an important part.
In 2009, Marillier developed breast cancer and underwent chemotherapy .
Works
The Sevenwaters series is set in Ireland , which is still Celtic and is attacked by Picts and Northmen. Especially the first volume, "The daughter of the woods", also based on a widespread tale that both the versions in the collection of fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm ( " The Six Swans ") and in Hans Christian Andersen ( " The Wild Swans ") can be found. Sorcha, the first-person narrator of the first part, has to sew shirts for her six brothers out of a prickly plant in order to free them from the curse of a witch. In the following novels, the story is carried on by her daughter or granddaughter. The series is complemented by the short story Twixt Firelight and Water , which was published in July 2010 in the anthology Australian Legends of Fantasy . The story tells, among other things, of Padric's adventures, the youngest of the six brothers from The Daughter of the Forests .
In contrast to the Sevenwaters trilogy, the "Under the North Star" trilogy is based in part on historical facts. It also takes place in Celtic Great Britain.
