Julije Knifer
Julije Knifer (born April 23, 1924 in Osijek , † December 7, 2004 in Paris ) was a Croatian painter. He is considered the most important Croatian artist of the 20th century.
Life
Knifer studied painting at the Art Academy in Zagreb in the early 1950s. After completing his studies, he became a co-founder and member of the “ Gorgona Group ”, which was in Zagreb from 1959 to 1966 as an important segment of contemporary Croatian art. In the early 1960s, the only formal element in his work was concentrated on the meander , which became the exclusive content of his work process. The same motif appeared again and again in countless variations and painting techniques, initially only in black and white, later also in color.
