Julio Argentino Kaplan Pera (born July 25, 1950 in Buenos Aires , Argentina ) is a Puerto Rican chess master .
Life
Julio Kaplan emigrated from Argentina to Puerto Rico in 1963 . He was Junior World Champion in Jerusalem in 1967 , ahead of favorites like Jan Timman and Robert Huebner . He was then awarded the title of International Master by FIDE . Between 1966 and 1972 he represented Puerto Rico at four Chess Olympiads . Kaplan finished second in Los Angeles in 1974 with Florin Gheorghiu , behind Svetozar Gligorić . In 1988 he retired from tournament chess. Julio Kaplan dealt with the programming of chess programs . Today he works for the software company Autodesk .
