Julius Conrad Freund (born June 11, 1801 in Uthlede / Weser , † July 18, 1877 in Berlin ) was a German mechanical engineer and industrialist.

Life

Julius Conrad Freund was born as the fifth son of the blacksmith and later veterinarian Julius Conrad Freund (1753-1842) and his wife Cathrin Lisbet (1762-1821), daughter of the blacksmith Mehrten von Würden (1730-1802) in Uthlede on the lower Weser. He had six brothers and four sisters.

When his brother Georg Christian opened his own machine factory in Berlin in 1815 , Freund joined him as an apprentice. Due to the early death of his brother, the 18-year-old friend took over the management of the young company in 1819. With diligence and skill, he developed his technical skills.

In 1835 he married Julie Emilie von Würden (1812–1842), daughter of the factory owner Burchardt von Würden, in Copenhagen. After the early death of his wife, he married her sister Charlotte Luise von Würden (1814–1877) in Berlin in 1849. He had five sons from his first marriage and three daughters from his second marriage.

On the occasion of the 50th business anniversary in 1869, Freund was awarded the Prussian Crown Order III. Class decorated. After his company was converted into a stock corporation in 1871, he left the management.
