Julius Hilgard
Julius Erasmus Hilgard (born January 7, 1825 in Zweibrücken , Pfalz , † May 8, 1891 in Washington, DC ) was an American scientist of German origin. He came to the United States at the age of ten with his father, lawyer Theodor Hilgard , and nine siblings, including Eugene Woldemar Hilgard , and spent his youth on his parents' farm in Belleville , Illinois .
He studied civil engineering and mathematics in Philadelphia and accepted a professorship at the University of Pennsylvania . Because of his knowledge of surveying, he finally joined the US Coast Survey (then United States Coast Survey , now National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration , or NOAA for short), of which he was chairman from 1881 to 1885. In 1863 Hilgard was a founding member of the National Academy of Sciences , and in 1874 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . Since 1863 he was a member of the American Philosophical Society .
The Hilgardtief is named after Julius Hilgard .
