Julius Schuberth
Julius Ferdinand Georg Schuberth (born July 14, 1804 in Magdeburg , † June 9, 1875 in Leipzig ) was a German music publisher and bookseller .
Life
Schuberth was born the son of the oboist and clarinetist Gottlob Schuberth, who worked in Magdeburg from 1804. The father worked as a teacher. The apartment was located at Schrotdorfer Straße 16 in Magdeburg's old town at least around 1817 . In 1819 he started as an apprentice in the Magdeburg bookstore Wilhelm von Heinrichshofens. After completing his apprenticeship and a short time as an assistant, he founded a book, music and map business with Julius Lübbers in Hamburg in 1826 with an affiliated publishing house. Schuberth opened a branch in Leipzig as early as 1832 and another in New York in October 1850 . In 1853 he left the Hamburg bookstore to his brother Friedrich and soon after relocated his place of business to Leipzig. Schuberth then lived alternately in New York and Leipzig. The successful publishing business flourished and around 1875 sold around 6,000 pieces of music.
In 1840 Schuberth founded the North German Music Association and he was also a correspondent for several German and North American newspapers. The Musikalisches Conversations-Blatt appeared in his publishing house in 1835 and the Hamburger Musikische Zeitung in 1837/38 . From 1840 to 1850 he published the Blätter für Musik und Literatur (from 1843 Kleine Musikzeitung ) and from the end of the 1850s in New York the (German-language) Kleine Musik-Zeitung (Musical Gazette) .
