Julius Steup (born October 26, 1847 in Leichlingen (Rhineland) , † January 10, 1925 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German librarian and classical philologist .

Julius Steup was the son of Georg Ludwig Steup (1817–1895) and his second wife Hermine, née Erbschloe. After attending the Friedrich Wilhelm High School in Cologne and graduating from high school in 1864, he began studying Classical Philology at the University of Göttingen , where he heard from Ernst Curtius , Ernst von Leutsch and Hermann Sauppe , among others . In 1866, Steup moved to the University of Bonn and continued his philology studies three years after the Bonn philologists ' dispute with Hermann Usener and Otto Jahn , the representatives of the Bonn School of Classical Philology , and Jacob Bernays . He also heard ancient history from Heinrich von Sybel , one of the founders of modern history, and Arnold Dietrich Schaefer , as well as epigraphy from Heinrich Nissen, who was then a private lecturer in Bonn .

After receiving his doctorate on Quaestiones Thucydideae in Bonn in 1868 and passing the state examination in 1869, he first worked as a high school teacher. In July 1870 he joined the Jena University Library as curator . From 1872 until his retirement in 1912 he headed the Freiburg University Library , initially with the title of board member, from 1873 as senior librarian, from 1911 as director. In 1883 he became an honorary professor at the University of Freiburg, and in 1908 a full honorary professor. In 1902 he received the title of Privy Councilor , in 1906 that of a Privy Councilor.

As a librarian, he renewed the alphabetical and systematic catalog of the Freiburg University Library and improved its usability. During his tenure, the new library was built by the architect Carl Schäfer , which could be moved into in 1903. As a classical philologist, he dealt in particular with Thucydides , whose work, comprising eight books, he published as a successor to Johannes Classen in an edition that has been reissued to this day.
