Julius started fencing in 1906 together with his brother Hans at the age of 17 in the gymnastics department of TV Offenbach. He was trained by the successful master Arturo Gazzera and joined the Offenbach fencing club a year later . While Hans, who mainly fought with the saber, later competed in tournaments for the fencing club, the left-hander Julius continued to fight mostly for the gymnastics club. Your coach Gazzera was employed in both clubs. Like his brother, Julius was also heavily involved in training young fencers.

Thomson took part in the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm in foil singles and was the last of his round to be eliminated in the first round. At the Olympic Games in Amsterdam in 1928 he took part again. There he again did not get past the first round, both in the foil singles and in the team.

With the team of FC Offenbach he was German team champion in the sword in 1914 and 1921 . In 1931 Thomson was a member of the Middle Rhine district team that won the fencing championships of the German Gymnastics Federation.
