Helldorff was the second son of Chamberlain Wolf Graf von Helldorff . Since the title of count was linked to the rights of the firstborn and to the possession of the manor Wohlmirstedt , he could not use the title of count. He was the owner of the manor on Runstedt and from 1877 to 1884 district administrator in Merseburg. In 1932, Runstedt had to make way for an opencast mine.

From 1878 to 1881 he was a member of the German Reichstag for the German Reich Party and the constituency of Merseburg 7 ( Querfurt , Merseburg).

He had been a member of the Corps Borussia Bonn since 1850 .
