Jumana Ghunaimat ( Arabic جمانة غنيمات, DMG Ǧumāna Ġunaimāt ; born December 4, 1973 in as-Salt) is a Jordanian journalist and Minister of State for Media Affairs and government spokeswoman .

Life

Jumana Ghunaimat grew up in as-Salt in al-Balqa Governorate and studied political science at the University of Jordan in Amman . She began her professional career in 1999 as a freelance writer and business reporter. Among other things, she worked for Al Sijill and the Arab daily newspaper Al Ra'i , published by the Jordan Press Foundation , before moving to the newspaper Al Ghad . Ghunaimat dealt in particular with the issues of poverty , unemployment , finance and published articles on the economic reform of Jordan from 1989 to 2004. Her appointment as editor-in-chief of the newspaper Al Ghad in late 2011 made her the first woman in the Middle East to become editor-in-chief of an Arab daily newspaper. She is regarded as an outstanding media representative in the region, has participated in events of the World Economic Forum on the Middle East and North Africa and worked as an external expert for the Washington Institute for Near East Policy .

In June 2018 she was appointed Minister of State for Media Affairs and Government Spokeswoman for the Jordanian government. This appointment was considered a surprise, as Ghunaimat had previously acted as a critic of the government and a representative of liberal rights. In 2014, she was even charged with a critical article about members of the House of Commons, but the case was dropped by the Attorney General.

She advocates the strengthening of women's rights, human rights and the democratization of society in Jordan and the Arab world, represents values ​​of tolerance and rejects extremism . She speaks out against religiously based dress codes in institutions of public life, business and universities .

She is a member of the Jordanian section of the International Women's Forum.
