The al-Balqa governorate ( Arabic محافظة البلقاء, DMG Muḥāfaẓat al-Balqāʾ ) is a governorate in northwestern Jordan . The state capital Amman is located southeast of the governorate. Around 491,000 people live in the area (as of 2015). The al-Balqa governorate borders on the Irbid , Ajlun , Jarash , Amman , Zarqa, and Madaba governorates . To the west is the border with Israel / West Bank . The capital of the governorate is Salt .

Landscape and economy

The area is mainly mountainous. Al-Balqa is one of the few governorates in Jordan that not only consists of wasteland, but also has forest areas. Extensive agriculture is also practiced. To the southwest, on the border with Israel, lies the Dead Sea . A special spa and wellness resort on the lake promotes tourism in the governorate.

history

The region became famous during the First World War . In March 1918, the British Army successfully attacked the capital Salt in the Battle of Amman , after which the five hundred years of Ottoman rule in what is now Jordan ended.
