The Maʿan Governorate ( Arabic محافظة معان, DMG Muḥāfaẓat Maʿān ) is one of the twelve governorates of Jordan. The seat of the governorate is the Maʿan of the same name .

Location and geography

The Maʿan Governorate is located in the southeast of the country. It borders in the north on the governorate of Amman , in the west on the governorates al-Karak , at-Tafila and Aqaba and in the east and south on the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia .

The governorate is largely covered by desert, in the west of the governorate is the Ash-Sharat mountain range with several mountain peaks over 1500  m .

The governorate covers an area of ​​32,832 km² and thus takes up more than a third of the entire national territory.

history

The Maʿan Governorate is rich in history, as testified by the Stone Age sites of Basta and Baʿdscha . Once part of the Edomite rulership , the region later housed Petra, the capital of the Nabatean Empire . After the region was under Roman control, among other things , it was captured by the Islamic expansion in the 7th century AD . The Crusader Castle of Montreal still testifies to the presence of the crusaders .

The Maʿan Governorate has existed since 1965. In 1994, the Aqaba governorate split off into its present form.

population

With 124,100 inhabitants (2013), Maʿan is the governorate with the second smallest population in the country and the one with the lowest population density. The urban population amounted to 68,100 people with 56,000 inhabitants in rural zones. The unemployment rate in 2013 was 15%.

Breakdown

The Maʿan Governorate is divided into four districts ( liwāʾ ): Qasaba Maʿan (based in Maʿan), Petra (based in Wadi Musa ), asch-Schaubak (based in asch-Schaubak ), and al-Husainiyya (based in al-Husainiyya ). The district of Qasaba Maʿan is the only one of these districts that is further subdivided into the five sub- districts ( qadāʾ ) Maʿan, Īl, al-Jafr, al-Muraigha and Adhruh.

Transport routes

Important highways that run through the governorate in a north-south direction are the R15 and R35 in the west and the R5 in the east. At the southern end of the R5 near al-Mudawwara is a border crossing to Saudi Arabia.

The Aqaba Railway also runs through the governorate .

Sights and special places

The largest city in the governorate is the capital Maʿan , home to Al-Hussein Bin Talal University and the center of a special economic zone .

The area around Wadi Musa with the rock city Petra , the Siq el-Barid and the Jabal Harun is of great tourist importance . Other places of interest in Ma Gan Governorate include the castles of Montreal , Qasr al-ʿUnaiza and Qasr Maʿan . Another important place in the history of Islam is Jabal at-Tahkim .
