The at-Tafila Governorate ( Arabic محافظة الطفيلة, DMG Muḥāfaẓat aṭ-Ṭafīla ) is one of the twelve governorates of Jordan . The seat of the governorate is at-Tafila .
geography
The governorate is located about 180 km southwest of Amman , the capital of Jordan.
The governorate at-Tafila borders in the north on the governorate al-Karak , in the east and south on the governorate Ma Ostenan, in the south on the governorate Aqaba and in the west on Israel . The area makes up 2.5% of the total area of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. It is divided into three districts.
history
The area once belonged to the ancient state of Edom . The valley known as Wadi al-Hasa formed the border between Edom and the neighboring Kingdom of Moab in what is now Karak Governorate. Wadi al-Hasa currently forms the border between at-Tafila and the Karak governorate and is administratively part of the Karak governorate.
Most of the cities were founded in the Edomite period. Ruins can still be found in the city of Busaira , where the capital of Edom was once located.
