Aqaba Governorate ( Arabic محافظة العقبة, DMG Muḥāfaẓat al-ʿAqaba ) is located in the southwest of Jordan . With an area of 6,900 km², Aqaba is the fourth largest of the state's twelve governorates and with a population of 142,300 (2013) it is the third smallest. The administrative seat and largest city of the governorate is Aqaba of the same name , where the country's only seaport is located.
The governorate is further subdivided into two districts (Qasaba al-ʿAqaba and Quwaira) and four sub-districts. In addition to trade, tourism is of particular economic importance. Wadi Rum , for example, is one of the country's main attractions in the Aqaba governorate.
The Aqaba Governorate borders the Maʿan and at-Tafila Governments as well as the states of Israel and Saudi Arabia .
