The Jarash Governorate ( Arabic محافظة جرش, DMG Muḥāfaẓat Ǧaraš ) is one of the twelve governorates of Jordan . The administrative seat and largest city is Gerasa . With an area of 410 km², Jarash is the smallest governorate in the state and with 191,700 (2012) inhabitants it is the governorate with the fifth smallest population, but the governorate has the second highest population density of the twelve governorates. The Jarash Governorate is located in western Jordan and borders the Irbid , Adschlun , al-Mafraq , Zarqa and al-Balqa governors . The area is mainly mountainous (300-1,300 meters above sea level) with a mild climate and high rainfall. Olive growing has been an important economic factor since ancient times.
