Maʿan ( maˈaːn , Arabic معان, DMG Maʿān ) is a city in Jordan . It is the capital of the governorate of the same name in the south of the country.
There is an ancient city of the same name in the southwest of the modern city.
It is an important transshipment point along the old trade routes that lead from Egypt via the Sinai or from the Hejaz in western Saudi Arabia to Syria and used to be the center of date palm and fruit growing. Maʿan is the station of the section of the Hejaz Railway that is still in operation .
