Jun Bernardino

Emilio "Jun" Bernardino, Jr. (born November 9, 1947 , † March 24, 2007 ) was a Filipino sports official and several years chairman of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).

biography

Bernardino was a basketball player with the Ateneo de Manila High School Blue Eaglets and the Diliman Fighting Maroons while studying sports management at the University of the Philippines . After graduation, he was the manager of the Vintage Sports team through the 1970s and 1980s before becoming executive director of the PBA.

In 1993 he became chairman (commissioner) of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) and held this office until 2002. During his tenure, the teams of Tanduay Rhum Masters (1999) and Red Bull in 2000 joined the league. In addition, during his tenure, foreign basketball players made it possible for them to play. In 2004 he was the founder of Shakey's V-League, a women's volleyball league . Most recently, during the 2006 to 2007 season, he was chairman of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the national association of sports clubs of eight universities . He was also temporarily the executive director of the basketball association (Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas). After his death, the PBA trophy was renamed “Jun-Bernardino-Throphy” in his honor.
