June Newton

June Newton ( June 3, 1923 in Melbourne , Australia , as June Browne ; † April 9, 2021 in Monte-Carlo ) was an Australian photographer . She became known under the pseudonym Alice Springs . She was married to the photographer Helmut Newton until his death.

Life

June Browne learned the from Germany before the Nazis fled photographer Helmut Newton in 1947 know in the photo studio in Melbourne. The two married a year later. While Helmut Newton was still unknown, she had her first successes as an actress under the pseudonym June Brunell. Because her husband was drawn back to Europe, they went together first to London and Paris in 1956 and after a short time back to Melbourne. In 1961 they finally moved to Paris.

In 1970 she started taking pictures too. According to her own account, she made her first recordings when her husband fell ill and she successfully stood in for him. Since her husband was now world-famous under the name Newton, she chose the pseudonym Alice Springs . At first she mainly worked for advertising campaigns and magazines. Later she concentrated exclusively on portrait photography. With photographs of prominent contemporaries, she had her first solo exhibition in Amsterdam in 1978 . The first illustrated book followed in 1983.

As art director , she oversaw all of her husband's exhibition and book projects. She shot the documentary Helmut by June for the French broadcaster Canal Plus . She was also always a model for her husband. The private photos the couple took of each other appeared in the 1998 illustrated book Us and Them .

On her birthday in June 2004, she opened the Museum of Photography in Berlin, which houses the collection of her husband, who had recently passed away. At the opening, the exhibitions Us and Them and Sex and Landscapes , supplemented by new images, were shown. The day before, Helmut Newton's urn was buried in the Schöneberg III cemetery in Berlin. Since 2005, works by Alice Springs have been exhibited in changing exhibitions in the Berlin Museum in the June's Room .

June Newton had lived in Monte-Carlo since 1981 . The couple regularly spent the winter months in California . She died in Monte-Carlo on April 9, 2021.
