The Young Philharmonic Orchestra Salzburg was founded in 1998 by the conductor Elisabeth Fuchs and consists of young musicians who are studying or have studied at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg .

The orchestra has set itself the task of introducing its audience to early music , classical and romantic music as well as contemporary music, and therefore tries to include at least one program item from the 20th and 21st centuries in each of its concerts. Several works by contemporary composers were premiered by the Junge Philharmonie.

Since 2004, the Junge Philharmonie has been offering its own subscription concert series, each with 4 concerts per season, in the Great Hall of the Mozarteum. On August 25, 2005, the orchestra made its debut at the Salzburg Festival in the Felsenreitschule in the silent film “Das Neue Babylon” (1929) with Dmitri Shostakovich's original music. As part of the “Mozart 22” project, the performance of all of Mozart's operas at the Salzburg Festival in the Mozart Year 2006, the orchestra performed the operas “ Bastien and Bastienne ” and “ Der Schauspieldirektor ” in the Salzburg Marionette Theater.

In addition to regular appearances in Austria, the Junge Philharmonie also gave several concerts in Germany, Italy and Croatia. A concert tour in 2001 led to China with performances in Beijing and Shanghai, among others .

In 2001, the Salzburg Philharmonic split off from the Salzburg Young Philharmonic Orchestra , which is also directed by Elisabeth Fuchs.
