The Juniper Dunes Wilderness is a protected wilderness area with an area of 7,140 acres (28.9 km²) in Franklin County , Washington state . Founded in 1984, it is famous for the northernmost occurrence of West American Juniper ( Juniperus occidentalis ), which is native to the area's large sand dunes. The closest place is Pasco .
fauna and Flora
Common species of animals include mule deer , bobcats , coyotes , silver badgers , skunks , weasels , tree prickers , pocket rats , kangaroo rats , several types of mice , hawks and sparrowhawks , owls , ravens , quails , ostrich quails , pheasants , pigeons , numerous songbirds and rattlesnakes . Contrary to what the name (Juniper = juniper) suggests, no trees of any significant number grow in the area. The rest of the vegetation consists of a. rabbit bushes ( Chrysothamnus nauseosus ; English rubber rabbitbrush or green rabbitbrush ), couch grass ( English blue bunch wheatgrass ), wild rice ( Oryzopsis ; English Indian rice grass ), magic flowers ( Abronia ; English white sand-verbena ), arenaria ( Arenaria ; English Franklin sandwort ) Tragacanth ( Astragalus ; English sicklepod milkvetch ), strand of hair ( Cymopterus ; English turpentine cymopterus ), wool white ( Hymenopappus ), opuntia ( Opuntia ; English prickly pear cactus ), beard thread ( Penstemon ; English sand-dune penstemon ), butterflies of the genus Psoralea ( English lanceleaf breadroot ), sorrel ( Rumex ; english sand dock ), balsamorhiza ( Balsamorhiza ; english Carey balsamroot ) Brodiaea TYPES ( english wild-hyacinth ), delphinium ( Delphinium ; english larkspur ), Linum perenne ( Linum perenne ; english wild flax ) , persicaria ( Eriogonum ; english snow buckwheat , Umbelliferae) the genus Lomatium ( english desert parsl ey Indian potato ) and Phacelia species ( English silverleaf phacelia ).

Access
There is currently no legal access to the Juniper Dunes Wilderness as all of the land in the area is privately owned. An agreement with the landowners from 2007 allows travel with permission on an old runway that ends near the wilderness area.
